The first casualty of war is innocence… Ocean secured the rights to the hit film about Vietnam and promoted the video release on its loading screen, while the packaging included a free audio tape of Smokey Robinson’s Tracks Of My Tears.

Multiple game types recreate key moments from the film. First the player must hunt through the jungle to blow up a bridge and reach a village, avoiding tripwires and enemy patrols. Then it is down into the Viet Cong tunnel system, portrayed in first-person 3D with knife-wielding enemies popping out of the water to stab you. Next comes an assault at night, firing flares to light up the approaching attackers.

Then it is a race through the flick-screen maze to find and destroy the bunker. Having a squad to protect and switch between as they get injured adds another interesting mechanic. Detailed graphics and a superb Johnathan Dunn soundtrack really create a good atmosphere, and the sub-games are all very challenging.
