Mr Driller: Drill Land is a game that was released exclusively for the GameCube, 20 years ago. Why, then, are we telling you to buy it now? Well, it was ported to modern consoles a couple of years ago, and at the time of writing, until April 16th, is on sale on the Nintendo Switch UK store for only £3.19. If you’re not aware of Mr Driller or what the game is like, well, it’s kind of like Tetris in reverse. You start at the top of a cavern filled with coloured blocks and must drill your way down to the bottom as fast as possible, otherwise your air supply will run out and if you’ve ever tried breathing without air, well, you can’t. Drilling underneath blocks will cause them to fall on your head, unless they are supported by other blocks, and that’s what makes the game so good. You need to plan a route but you also need to be fast, and marrying the two makes for surprisingly complex, addictive gameplay. Mr Driller: Drill Land has a number of game modes, enhancing lastability substantially, and the presentation is great. It’s published by Bandai Namco and feels a lot like one of their other titles, the bonkers Katamari Damacy. As it’s an arcade game, its full RRP is perhaps a little OTT, but for the current sale price you’d be mad to miss it.
