One could argue that System 3 initiated one of the cheapest money-saving tropes of all times by having its sequel take place in modern times, which really only makes sense in movies.

In Last Ninja 2, our ninja hero Armakuni is taken across time and space to face his greatest nemesis IN NEW YORK! Last Ninja 2 is easily the most technically accomplished of the Last Ninja games. Even though one might not want to see the ancient legend of ninjas taking place in modern times, the backgrounds are stunningly detailed, with lots of animated hazards. Armakuni even picks up stuff like a normal person instead of squatting over like he’s about to take a dump, and his attacks are better animated.

The puzzles are also a step up from the original. Some of them might seem a bit unfair, like the “choose a door in the sewers” part where the wrong choice will kill you dead. On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about those damn stone-hopping rivers anymore. I call that a win-win.

I have been around in retro circles for some time – first dabbling in retro events, then retro magazines, and then retro books. I have now settled into producing yearly publications of yesteryear Newsfield magazines that are aptly called Annuals. I got his first 8-bit computer back in 1982 after nagging my parents for an arcade experience in the bedroom and ultimately had to wait a good few years before that actually happened. These days I play on the current gen systems but finds myself collecting all the systems I wished I had as a kid. There is always the next purchase – there is still so much to collect.
