We previously reported on the metroidvania title The Guise coming to consoles, and the omens were true, so now it’s here! So join me in the game’s dark and fantastic world for our The Guise Switch review.

The first thing to note about The Guise is that it looks absolutely gorgeous, as if it’s been designed by Tim Burton under the direction of Studio Ghibli while trying to recreate Hollow Knight. The stunning visual style is the perfect fit for the game’s dark fairytale setting, which involves vengeful gods and a young orphan boy transformed into a monster. And The Guise sounds as good as it looks, with atmospheric music and sound effects helping to create an unnerving sense of foreboding.

So, The Guise is a dark treat aesthetically, and it plays well too, with tight controls and a well-balanced mix of engaging storytelling, exploration, satisfying combat, and platforming all in the tried and trusted metroidvania style. It’s not the easiest game, so expect to die a few times along the way. And you can only save at save points, which does add to the challenge, but also feels slightly archaic. Sensibly priced at a budget price, The Guise is sure to offer an enjoyable experience for fans of dark fairytales and Metroidvania games, but I suspect it won’t convert any new fans to either genre.

If you like the sound of dis Guise, you can get it now from the eshop for the more than reasonable price of £5.99.
