We recently reported on the imminent launch of Attack of the Karens, a new game from one of our favourite indie publishers, Flynn’s Arcade, And by demanding to see the manager, and complaining loudly lin true Karen fashion, we’ve got our hands on a copy of the game to bring you our Attack of the Karens Switch review. (Actually, we just asked politely for a copy!)
Ultimately, how much enjoyment you’ll get from Attack of the Karens is somewhat dependent on how amusing you find the “Karen” memes generally.
Attack of the Karens could easily have been a tasteless game that focuses on blasting away at women, and while it’s true that all the baddies in the game are women (the titular “Karens,” the in-game explanation of the cyborg Karens’ invasion helps to negate any potential accusations of tastelessness.
So, with that out of the way, is it any good? Well, it does some things well, with an attractive retro-style duotone colour palette and well-judged use of sampled speech creating an old-school arcade feel. The roguellte level generation is also well implemented.
Your ship controls well, and you’ll find the requisite weapon upgrades one would expect in such a shoot ‘em up.
So, is Attack of the Karens one of the best bullet hell shoot ‘em up on the Switch? Far from it.
And this is the problem with the game, while it’s fine, there are already a number of superior games of this ilk on the Switch. Other than the Karen theme, and the roguelite elements, Attack of the Karens doesn’t offer much to distinguish itself.
If you’re after a fun, silly, playable shoot ‘em up, and you find the concept of the Karen inherently amusing you’ll no doubt get a lot of fun from Attack of the Karens. And you’ll certainly get bang for your buck at its bargain price of £4.99 on the eshop.
