We’ve seen Doom running on a number of machines on which it wasn’t intended to run, but how about Quake on a ZX Spectrum?

Coder ‘Alone Coder’ and pixel artist ‘Dragons Lord’ have created a playable Quake Engine demo including moving enemies for the 128K ZX Spectrum.

The 3D engine is reminiscent of Incentive Software’s 3D Freescape engine, which was used for games such as Driller, but it is claimed that this new engine “totally beats” Freescape.

Alone Coder has form for bringing first-person shooters to the 128K Speccy, having released a port of Wolfenstein in 2004.

The demo runs smoothly on a standard 3.5 MHz Spectrum, but runs faster on 7 MHz and 14 MHz machines, even including a second floor when run at 14 MHz.

The demo can be controlled using WASD or cursor keys and can be downloaded in .tap format.

I've been playing video games since the 1980s, from the 8-bit era onwards. I have had to play one-handed following a stroke in 2014, and I blog about playing games with one hand.
