a cat & his boy

A Cat & His Boy, a homebrew Game Boy title developed by Howdy Riceball, started life as a 72-hour game jam entry before being further developed. Howdy Riceball has gifted the Fusion team a copy of the game and considering Retro Faith loves cats, we should take a quick look.

The story concerns a young boy named Leif. He’s having a hard time and has been struggling since his parent’s divorce. During his darkest moment, he finds a new friend, a little kitten he names Midnight and the two become friends.

At its heart, A Cat & His Boy is an adventure title that requires you to solve puzzles by collecting items and using them accordingly. The story slowly builds and Leif begins to feel the benefit of having Midnight around to make his life better.

Along the way, there is a change of pace with a simple mini-game that requires you to catch butterflies in a net to beat the high score. This is a nice touch considering you play the game, called Fetchy’s Bug Out, on an in-game Game Boy.

A Cat & His Boy will only take you a short while to finish but for the £2 asking price, it’s a lovely homebrew title that has heart. The gameplay isn’t particularly deep and the puzzles are easy to solve but playing as a cat is fun and you can meow by pressing the B button, so what’s not to love?

Thank you Howdy Riceball for sending us your game. You can purchase the ROM on itch.io now.
