In Azazel’s Christmas Fable you play as the titular elf as he tries his best to find and stop the source of joy emanating from the North Pole. Satan has had enough of Santa Claus and his elves and wants his minion to infiltrate and take down the pesky do-gooders forever.
The story for this classic point-and-click adventure is as silly as it sounds and you will be chuckling away to some of the conversations. All the characters have been voiced by just two artists and they’re all fun to listen to. The dialogue is also short and snappy and this helps with the games pacing.
As with any adventure game, you progress by solving puzzles, talking to the locals and finding items to use along the way. The puzzles are tricky in places but never overwhelming, the balance between challenge and fun is just about right even if some do follow the tried and tested tropes.
Graphically it’s a little rough around the edges but does capture the Christmas and retro feel developer Greg Muhlbock was aiming for. The voice work and overall sound are decent, if not outstanding, with some catchy festive tunes spread throughout.
Overall, Azazel’s Christmas Fable is fun and just about the right length for a game at this price point. It doesn’t do anything new for the genre but hits all the right notes. If you’re looking for a festive romp this is a great way to pass a few hours over those cold winter nights.
