We recently reported that 8-Bit Legit were bringing the NES indie title Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril to the Nintendo Switch. And, as promised, here’s our Battle Kid Switch review. Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril certainly looks the part, with authentic 8-bit NES visuals. And the sound is also authentically 8-bit, with a soundtrack that works surprisingly well at ramping up the tension.
The game itself wears its inspiration on its sleeve somewhat, as Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril looks and plays not unlike the classic NES Mega Man titles.
If you were a fan of Mega Man on the NES (and we certainly were!) you’ll definitely enjoy Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril with its blend of classic Mega Man-style platforming, shooting, and exploration, with tight controls, well-designed characters, and the choice of a story mode or an arcade mode with fewer cut scenes, which is most welcome if you’re impatient like I am! That said, the story mode is engaging and does add longevity to the game.
With its NES stylings, Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril is a good fit for the Nintendo Switch, but it would also be a worthy addition to a future Evercade cartridge, if you’re listening, Blaze?
Sadly, I don’t have a Nintendo Switch Online controller to test it, but if you do have one, you can play Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril exactly as originally intended by developer Sivak Games, who originally released the game as a NES cartridge back in 2010.
Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril, it’s mega, man!
Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril is available on Nintendo Switch from the eshop from Friday 19th May 2023.
An Xbox One version with platform-exclusive achievements is also being released on the same day.
