We previously reported on the announcement of Crypt Stalker for Nintendo Switch, so following this up, here’s our review…
I must admit, stalking crypts isn’t a pastime I’ve ever considered, but I suppose everyone needs a hobby, and it’s markedly less aggressive than Monster Mash singer Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s chosen crypt activity of kicking them!
Crypt Stalker is an action platformer that plays somewhat like an unholy Frankensteining of Castlevania and Altered Beast that’s risen from the grave for the seemingly undead formats of the NES and Game Boy. In fact, it seems that there as many great NES and Game Boy games being released now as there were back in the consoles’ late-80s/early-90s heydays, and here’s another to add to the list of neo-retro classics!
In the game, you play the titular Crypt Stalker, and you go about stalking them crypts armed with a whip and a pistol to help you defeat undead attackers, such as mummies. The game boasts atmospheric graphics and music, plus intuitive controls, making it a pleasure to play.
The game offers exceptional value for money, as you’re kind of getting three games in one. There’s the “console game” (the NES version), the “handheld game” (Game Boy version) and the “lost sequel,” which is more of the console game, but with a somewhat psychedelic colour palette. And in answer to the question posed by the headline, Crypt Stalker is, indeed, dead good!
And with a huge 71% saving on the eshop until 21st April 2024, making the game a mere £1.79, buying it now is a real no-brainer.
