Perhaps the most obvious word that might spring to mind upon seeing FUR Squadron in action is a different three-letter F-word, namely the “Fox” in “Starfox”. Indeed, with its 3D space combat and its cast of charmingly cute characters, comparisons to Nintendo’s Starfox are inevitable, but FUR Squadron isn’t just Starfox with a 1980s neon filter applied to it. In fact, that 1980s filter is quite appropriate because playing FUR Squadron brings to mind 1980s arcade classics such as Space Harrier and Afterburner. The title of the game even appears to be a homage to a 1980s arcade game (namely UN Squadron).
FUR Squadron is a rather simple game, but that’s to its credit in this case, and it’s an impressive achievement, especially considering it was developed by a solo developer in his spare time.
Overall, FUR Squadron is a great-looking tribute to the 1980s on-rails arcade shooters via Starfox, and it plays just as well as it looks.
