Despite being scripted by Paul Rose, Quantum Witch is actually a very personal project of its creator and sole developer, Nikki Jay.

Like with so many great contemporary indie games, Quantum Witch looks set to combine a retro pixel art aesthetic and a classic gameplay style (in this case a Metroidvania-style game) with deeper storytelling elements. Indeed, Quantum Witch began life as a prospective novel exploring Nikki Jay’s “past trauma from religion and bigotry against queer folk”. And as well as tackling some pretty weighty issues, Quantum Witch also seems set to be pretty darn funny too, citing Douglas Adams as an influence.

Nikki Jay describes the game thusly: “a story driven retro pixel art LGBTQ adventure, where no fourth wall is left unbroken! Also it has a dancing skeleton who can see through time. I MEAN!”

It certainly sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun, as well as a thought-provoking use of the medium. We’ll be able to see the results for ourselves when the game is released on PC in 2025.

I've been playing video games since the 1980s, from the 8-bit era onwards. I have had to play one-handed following a stroke in 2014, and I blog about playing games with one hand.
