The idea of a loaf of bread screaming at jam jars may sound like the latest installation at the TATE Modern and not like a great video game. However, Screaming Loaf, from AshumArcade, spreads its ideas across multiple genres including puzzles and action with some platforming sprinkled into the recipe. Once you get your head around the bizarre concept, a wonderful indie game is waiting for you.
The idea is to kill all the enemies on each small level by screaming at them. Some enemies take a single scream while others are hardened condiments that take a few screams. Holding the scream button lets out a longer blast and this can be used tactically to clear your foes quicker. There are also times when you start to get overwhelmed and your platforming skills will be tested.
The mechanics are simple but devious puzzles will mean you need to use your loaf to get through the level. The puzzles are quite traditional with moving platforms and gates but a unique idea of leaving one slice on bread behind creates some interesting moments. The idea that you can still scream from the left behind slices means you will need to think outside the bread bin a lot.
The presentation for Screaming Loaf is clean but also a little bland in places. This is to be expected considering the game has been developed by one man. However, there’s lots of charm to your loaf and the enemies that are trying to toast you. A special mention needs to be made for the lovely music that compliments the overall flavour of the game.
The gameplay does feel simple at first but there is hidden depth and replayability thanks to a star system that requires practice and improvement to get 100% clear on each level. These stars can then be used to unlock cool apparel, such as sunglasses, for your loaf. Currently sitting at £2 on Steam, this is the perfect game to while away a weekend or for those looking for something a little different.

Ooh! This looks fun! If it gets a Switch port I’ll pick it up.
