If you’ve ever found yourself lamenting that “they don’t make ‘em like they used to,” then we’ve got great news! 8-Bit Legit really do make ‘em like they used to, and we’ve long been big fans of their neo-retro titles here at Fusion R Gamer, and I’m delighted to report that Project Blue is yet another NES-based triumph. Offering a maddeningly addictive blend of flip-screen platforming, shooting, and collecting, all charmingly presented in a retro-futurist cyberpunk style, with appealing character designs, we have no doubt that had Project Blue been released for the NES in 1987, it would be considered something of a classic, spoken about reverentially in hushed tones.
And like most games from the 8-bit era, Project Blue is no pushover, but don’t worry, you can choose a difficulty level to suit your skill level, with options including “normal”, “hard” or “brutal”, which should give you an idea of where Project Blue’s difficulty is pitched, and even though it’s difficult, Project Blue is never unfair, even though the odd “leap of faith” is required,
If you enjoy 8-bit flip–screen action platformers, then Project Blue is a project that you absolutely must embark upon.
Project Blue is out now on Switch (version reviewed) and Xbox.
