In a Tweet commemorating 38 years since he launched the Amstrad CPC464, Lord Sugar explained it was ‘the first affordable all-in-one home computer. On other computers you had to use the home TV as a monitor and also plug in a cassette player. The CPC464 had it all’. Who are we to argue with Lord Sugar on its ground-breaking tech and influence on the gaming world – we don’t want to get fired!
It seems just yesterday that those cassettes were loading up our favourite games from Football Manager to Chase HQ. It was also offered as a commercial computer as well as a gaming computer and its success led to Lord Sugar buying Sinclair, one of its main rivals. We know many game developers cut their teeth on CPC machines back in the day due to its simplicity and affordability.
