New indie developer DirtyDeeds has announced a brand-new Commodore64 title starring everyone’s favourite Star Wars character – Jar Jar Binks. DannyD, the main coder of the game, has recently taken a career break from corporate coding and wanted to do something more akin to bedroom coding – something he wished he had done more of as a kid on his trusty C64.
JarJar64 is a flip-screen action platformer, where you have to collect and skewer frogs to eat, dodge monsters, and get to the end. Danny also mentions the Force will appear in various guises in later levels, which he teases, will be a bit stinkerwhiff.
Over 25 levels are promised across five well-known Star Wars locations, from his underwater home of Otoh Gunga, all the way to Naboo.
When asked why he’s using Jar Jar Binks – he is a controversial character in Star Wars fandom after all, Danny pointed out that “Jar Jar is the perfect character for a C64 platforming game. He’s got a funny walk, so animation doesn’t have to be tight, plus he’s a muddy brown colour. It’s the perfect fit.”
JarJar64 will be released later this year. JarJar64 development has been halted.
