With a title like “Color Pals” and its simplistic visuals and cheerful speech, you would be forgiven for assuming that Color Pals is strictly for the very young, but as our Color Pals Switch review will explain, you’d be very much mistaken!
That said, playing the first level will do nothing to dispel your preconceptions, as it’s very very easy. Don’t get complacent though, the challenge soon ramps up considerably, revealing an inventive and surprisingly tricky puzzle game beneath the game’s pre-school exterior, when the game shows its true colours a few levels in.
The aim of the game is to clear each level by navigating to the exit, though to really complete a level, you’ll want to collect all the stars along the way.
But there’s a twist, and that’s where the “Color” in “Color Pals” comes in. If you touch a surface that’s a different colour from your character, you’re killed! Luckily, there are also power-ups to collect that will change your character’s colour. However, collecting said colour-changing power-ups and reaching the exit will require a degree of forward planning, careful movements and precise jumping. As with all the best puzzle games, the idea is simple, but finishing every level is anything but!
Color Pals is yet another smart little indie game from the Eastasiasoft stable, and it comes recommended to all fans of puzzle games. “Color” us impressed, “Pals”!
