Blooby Block is a new block puzzle game from indie developer Basement Fun Games. The head-scratcher is out on Steam on 2nd June 2023 although there is a demo to try right now. We have a review of the beta release but more features and changes may come before the final release.
You take control of a little blob that is on a mission to save his friends over 180 increasingly difficult puzzle boards. The basic premise of each level is to grab the key and head to the exit while avoiding being killed by the various enemies that bounce around. However, to fully finish each level you will need to solve the puzzle and collect three gems before exiting.
The levels are broken down into different-looking worlds ranging from a forest to a desert. As you progress the enemies start to become more complex in the ways they try to stop you. You always need to keep one eye on the enemies as they move around each board while pondering on the best way to complete the level.
The first set of levels is easy and just helps you to acclimatize to the different gameplay mechanics. Once you get going the puzzles start to ramp up in difficulty quickly and the boards begin to contain more objects such as traps and elevators. Some levels contain spells that can be collected and used against the enemies or to progress further in the puzzle.
Blooby Block has some ingenious puzzles that will tax your brain. You will continuously make a mistake pushing the blocks around and have to hit that restart button. The game is controlled using a mouse and keyboard but would also work with a controller if this can be implemented later on by the developer.
The graphics, sounds and music are functional but do not stand out as much as they could. There are very few textures on the game boards and many of the levels feel similar because of this. However, the puzzles work well and it will take a long time to finish all 180 levels. If you’re a fan of logic puzzle games this will appeal to you, casual puzzle fans may wish to wait for a sale.
