Shera’s Music Party, a new GBC title from developer Rubenretro, is getting ready to launch on Kickstarter and we have a demo to preview to get the party started. It’s part of a double release that includes a second rhythm game called Linda’s Music Party.
The indie developer has described them as “rhythm music video games inspired by games like Guitar Hero or Rock Band” and the premise is to play the piano in time with the chiptunes. Similar to other games in the rhythm genre, notes fall from above and you need to press the corresponding action at the right time.
The game has a feline theme that includes unlockable cats. You can choose your cat from a Street Fighter inspired menu once you unlock them. Hitting notes purr-fectly (sorry) will result in an ‘epic’ shout out that adds bonuses to your score, get it wrong by missing the note and your score is harmed.
The demo only has two stages to try and both are on the easy setting so nothing particularly taxing to get through. But you get a good feel for the gameplay with the piano keys being controlled using the d-pad and buttons that are clearly displayed on screen. You also have parts of the songs that require you to repeatedly tap the key to keep the rhythm going.
The graphics make full use of the GBC’s palette and the chunky, vibrant visuals are a treat to see. The songs themselves are catchy chiptunes that have been created by Beatscribe and are of a high quality from we have seen so far.
