It’s probably no surprise that we’re reporting on the latest Arcade Archives release from Hamster Corp, as we like to keep track of the arcade titles that get dusted off for this series of emulated arcade titles. The latest of such arcade titles to be hitting Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 as part of the Arcade Archives series is Surprise Attack, a 1990 side-scrolling platform shooter by Konami.

The aim of Surprise Attack is to recover a space station, shuttle, and moon base from an international terrorist group called Black Dawn that threatens the universe (so, yer standard 90s video game plot, then!).

In the game, stages are cleared when all the bombs in the stage are recovered and the final location is reached.

One rather unusual aspect of the game is that after defeating each stage’s boss, there is a bonus quiz, and if you answer correctly, you will receive bonus points.

I've been playing video games since the 1980s, from the 8-bit era onwards. I have had to play one-handed following a stroke in 2014, and I blog about playing games with one hand.
