BBC Radio 6 Music have broadcast an episode of Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone dedicated to video game music.
Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone is a weekly show dedicated to experimental and underground music. The episode broadcast yesterday evening (Sunday 22nd January 2023) was dedicated to video game music and featured soundtracks from a pleasingly eclectic selection of games.
Previous BBC broadcasts dedicated to video game music have included last year’s From 8-Bit to Infinity Proms. It’s great to see the BBC taking the genre of video game soundtracks so seriously!
Games featured in this episode of Freak Zone included: The Sims, Secret of Mana, Hotline Miami, Super Mario Bros, Grim Fandango, God of War Ragnarök and more. It’s pleasing to see that Maconie has delved beyond the obvious choices. Indeed, perhaps surprisingly, Maconie seems to be something of a gamer himself, having previously extolled the virtues of the Assassin’s Creed series on air. The video game soundtrack special of Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone can be listened to on demand via BBC Sounds until Tuesday 21st February. 2023.
