Classic Sport Driving was released on Steam in June 2023 and being such huge fans of retro racers it would be rude not to give it a whirl. Developed and published by Pixel Wrappers, this budget road racing game pits you against other players in online leaderboards.
The main game is broken down into a set of courses that require you to beat the clock. The three-star system lets you know how well you’re doing against the competition and there is also a track generator to tackle.
Classic Sport Driving feels a bit like OutRun meets Lotus Turbo Challenge mixed in with some retro-style polygon graphics. The handling starts to become second nature after a few goes and the simple controls mean that anyone can have a go. Those wanting a more challenging experience can set manual gears.
Once you blast through the main set of tracks, and achieve the maximum star rating, the only real longevity is facing up against other online players to reach the summit of the leaderboards. This is tough as some players have already become quite the experts but racing veterans will revel in the challenge.
The graphics are decent if a little bland in places although the developer is going for a 90s feel so this can be forgiven. There is some variety in the tracks but many of the main game tracks are reused or feel similar. The lighting effects on the nighttime races are excellent though and exciting to play.
The best part of the game is the pumping 90s base music that really matches the game style and gives a very cool feel to proceedings. Arcade racing fans will certainly enjoy playing through this one although there isn’t much longevity to it. It’s certainly worth a playthrough for the price and has a unique aesthetic.
