We previously reported that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be crossing paths with the world of Street Fighter in comic book form. We’re fans of games featuring both franchises, so we’ve been looking forward to seeing them cross over. The first issue hit stands today (Wednesday 7th June 2023). So, was it worth the wait? I should start my review by making you aware that I’m a big fan of both franchises, and of ridiculous comic book crossovers in general, so I was already favourably predisposed to this title, and this opening chapter doesn’t disappoint.
It sees the always-nefarious Baxter Stockman working in league with none other than M Bison, resulting in the TMNT entering the Street Fighter tournament. Indeed, much of the enjoyment to be found is seeing how the TMNT react in the face of the Street Fighters’ signature moves, which results in some amusing dialogue on the side of the Turtles. As you’d hope from a title combining these two franchises, the fight scenes are depicted well on the page.
But thankfully, there is a story of mystery and intrigue underpinning the fight scenes, and it’s not simply page after page of fights.
Writer Paul Allor has done a good job of ensuring that he’s telling an engrossing story that works well for both franchises and not just providing artist Ariel Medel with fight after fight to draw.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vs Street Fighter is undoubtedly a lightweight comic, but it should satisfy fans of either franchise. And let’s be honest, if you’re considering reading a comic called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vs Street Fighter, you won’t be looking for highbrow, genre-redefining comics. You’ll be looking for a fun read packed with action, and that’s exactly what you’ll find.
