Intrepid Izzy has found its way onto PlayStation, Xbox and Switch thanks to publisher Ratalaika Games. Developer Senile Team originally released this action platformer on Steam in 2022 before porting it to Dreamcast shortly after.
You play as Izzy, a young woman who is magically transported to a strange world after she unleashes a genie from a chest. You must now uncover the secrets of this world and defeat the evil genie to win your freedom. To get to the showdown with the genie you will first need to find the four lost stones.
Intrepid Izzy uses interconnected levels similar to a Metroidvania style map system that grows as you explore. Each area has its own theme from dark mines to frosty mountain peaks and you travel between them using warps that you unlock.
One of the best features is the different abilities that Izzy picks up along the way. When you defeat a boss you’re given a new costume to wear that grants flying, gliding and other new moves. The great thing about this moves system is that you can only wear one costume at a time so you will need to switch between them to find all the secrets.
The fighting is quite simple, you just tap the attack button to unleash a combo. But other moves such as slide and uppercut can be used on enemies as well. Beyond that, this is a straightforward platforming title that gradually gets more difficult as you get going.
Intrepid Izzy is a top-notch game that any fan of 2D platforming should play. The characters are fun and the level design is excellent. It’s not the hardest game but will take some trial and error to uncover all the items needed to progress.
