Influential game designer John Gibson sadly passed away on the 23rd of July 2023. John had a career in game design that spanned 40 years and he was well respected by his colleagues and those that played his games. He started his gaming career with Molar Maul which was released for the ZX Spectrum by Imagine.

John also worked for Pysgnosis during the 90s and worked on games such as the influential CD-ROM title Microcsom. Simon Butler, who worked with John, told Fusion that “John Gibson was one of the founding fathers of the UK development scene. A quiet-spoken man who tolerated Scousers with humour-filled stoicism while smoking hand-rolled cigarettes of mysterious eastern origin. Gregarious, talented and a coding force to be reckoned with. He will be missed.”

The video game community was touched by John’s work and many of his colleagues as well as fans of his work have been paying tribute to his memory. John will be missed and his impact on the world of video games will be remembered for a long time to come.
