We don’t often cover mobile games, but here’s a worthy exception!
Card games pre-date video games, so fulfill the “retro” criterion, and part of the appeal of retrogaming is nostalgia. Marvel Snap stirs nostalgic feelings of Marvel trading cards, especially the card game OverPower, for which I owned a deck, but had nobody to play against. With 21st-century mobile games there’s always a willing opponent. Indeed, Marvel Snap can only be played online, but there’s no shortage of players.
Is it Snap? No, it’s simple, but not as simple as matching cards! Each player has a deck of cards featuring Marvel characters. In addition to beautiful illustrations, each card has two numbers, the left-hand number denoting how much energy it costs to play the card, and the right showing how much damage it does.
The aim is to capture two of three locations on each game, by playing the highest number of damage points.
Despite being free to play, it’s enjoyable, addictive fun without spending a penny. Available now on iOS and Android.
