RunBean Galactic is the very epitome of the old cliche “cheap and cheerful”. It’s a very simple endless runner at its core, but with the unusual difference that you’re not running from left to right, but around a circular planet. You run automatically, but along your run, you’ll have to avoid many an obstacle, jumping over spikes and sliding under traps.
The simplicity of RunBean Galactic is inversely proportional to the complexity of its title, requiring just two buttons to play (down to duck, and A to jump.) (Oh, and left to restart when you die, which you’ll be pressing a lot!). The circular playing field, combined with the simplicity of the controls make RunBean Galactic incredibly addictive, as you try to beat your previous high score with each go.
It’s probably best considered a minigame, but the online leaderboard and randomly generated levels increase its longevity, as no two goes are the same!
Visually, RunBean Galactic is clean and colourful to the point of appearing childlike, but its simplistic graphical style really suits the game. The game’s music is atmospheric, and there’s a suitably meaty “thud!” sound when you collide with an obstacle.
RunBean Galactic may be “just” an endless runner, but the circular playing field is inspired, and it really does elevate the game above many others in the genre.
RunBean Galactic is well worth the standard asking price of £4.49, but if you run fast enough, you can grab it for just £3.59 on the eshop until 18th April 2023. RunBean Galactic is also available for PS4 & PS5, Xbox One, and PC.
