Mortal Kombat’s developer, NetherRealm Studios, have released a short video to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the gory one-on-one fighter.
The original installment of the long-running franchise was released in arcades by Midway in 1992, and it soon gained notoriety for its bloody gore and graphic “finishing moves”
The original game received a number of well-received home conversions, notably for Sega Mega Drive and ( perhaps surprisingly) Amiga 500. The SNES version was notable for the wrong reasons, as in the 1990s, Nintendo had a strict policy on only allowing family-friendly games on its consoles, meaning the crimson blood splatters were replaced with grey spurts of sweat.
The franchise’s latest installment, Mortal Kombat 11, was published by Warner Bros in 2019.
The franchise has seen three live-action movie adaptations, the most recent (and arguably best) of which was released in 2021.
