So, you can order the game now as a digital download, but what is the physical version from Protovision all about? Well, cartridge only of course. To quote the game’s coder, Antonio Savona: “the game is larger than anything I’ve ever seen, to be honest, and this is only possible with a cartridge. Besides, 25 SID tunes, SFX etc. The game is all done in bitmap mode and includes more than 150 bitmapped, untiled rooms. So, each room is unique, and not done with tiles. Even with the compression I’m using, the game fills up the cartridge. Also, sprites, I stopped counting at 3,000, not sure how many we have now! It’s huge.“
The physical edition will arrive as quite a “prestigious” edition (Protovision’s words). It’ll include a CD with the soundtrack (the game has more than 90 minutes of music, and over 25 tunes). The usual posters, stickers and other things. Alain Mauricet, the game graphician, is a professional comic artist (DC Comics) so you can expect a lot of nice illustrations. The manual that I have seen is already a very good indication of this. Additionally, there is a poster, the cartridge itself and possibly a small action figure, if Protovision manages to make it happen on time.
With current global chip shortages, we don’t expect this to ship immediately, but hopefully not much later either. Additionally, the game will be their “limited edition game” for 2023. Each year Protovision selects one game to be their “limited edition” for the year. So, besides the regular version, they also have a limited run of collectable “gold carts”.
Story
My name is Frank Further. Further… It’s kind of ironic, come to think of it, as I’ve never left my village. Neither had my dad and his dad before him. It’s the same for everyone in our land since our four statues of wellness were stolen one night moons ago. Everyone seems to be cursed with numbness, immobility and indifference. Adventure, curiosity, audacity and courage are words that have disappeared from our vocabulary.
I was born in Porkville and, as sure as the gods made little green apples, I know I’m going to die in Porkville. Without ever leaving the valley. Oh, don’t get me wrong. It’s a nice and pleasant lowland with green pastures, fruit trees, wild mushrooms, flowers and a beautiful little pond.
The only things that disturb the peace of this little haven are the mosquitoes and the fireflies. I hate these stupid insects and I sometimes chase them. I have to be thankful to them though as it is during one of my mundane bug hunts that I stumbled upon the entrance to a cave… Could this be my quest? A pig quest?
