If you were a gamer 30 years ago, you probably remember the perhaps disproportionate controversy caused by the release of the Mega CD title Night Trap. The mainstream weren’t quite sure what to make of games (or “interactive movies”) aimed at adults which featured the kind of FMV (full motion video) made possible by the relatively new CD format.
Well, yesterday the BBC Archive marked the 30th anniversary of the game by posting news coverage of the controversy surrounding the game’s controversy which was broadcast at the time of its release.
On Twitter, former CVG editor Jaz Rignall revealed that the footage in the news report was shot in the offices of Mean Machines Sega magazine, so you can enjoy a bit of games mag history in the footage.
Despite the press outrage, in the UK, Night Trap didn’t even receive the BBFC’s most restrictive rating, being awarded a mere 15 certificate.
At the time, Nintendo of America’s Vice President made the claim that Night Trap would “never” appear on a Nintendo console. So what’s this, then? How times have changed! Indeed, we also wonder if he saw this year’s April Fool’s release in which the FMV footage from the game was released on a Game Boy Advance cartridge!
