Gerald “Jerry” Lawson, the famed inventor of video game cartridges, was born 82 years ago today. His work within the gaming industry is synonymous with the Fairchild Channel F which was the first console to feature cartridges that could be taken in and out to play different games. Before this revolutionary invention, game consoles would have all the games built-in with no new ones available.
Jerry also pioneered early arcade games and worked on some of the earliest microprocessor-driven arcade video games. Before his death in 2011, he was honoured as a video game pioneer for his work by the International Game Developers Association. There is also a commemorative display celebrating his life and work at The World Video Game Hall of Fame in New York.
