Earlier this year, we brought you the news that HarleQuest! was up for crowdfunding and since then it has achieved its funding goal. The new Dreamcast title, published by Wave Game Studios, is being developed by Ross Kilgariff and we were lucky enough to catch up with him to see how the game was shaping up.
The full interview is set to be published in a future Retro Fusion Books Magazine but Ross tells us that HarleQuest! is set for release on Dreamcast and PC in “late 2024 or early 2025.” He also explains that he is aiming to develop “a polished and fun experience! We’re aiming for five different dungeon areas, each with its own style and specific gameplay focus. There will be melee weapons, ranged weapons, spell scrolls, stamina, sneaking, rolling, boss battles, permanent death, couch co-op, high scores and a degree of persistence between each run. Oh, and a story told through non-verbal cutscenes and in-game sequences.”

When asked why he chose Dreamcast to develop his first game, Ross explained “I have an affection for Dreamcast and appreciate the creative and technical challenges of working with such limited resources. Ultimately I want to make the same kind of game as I enjoyed growing up and to share that with an audience of like-minded people.”
He follows this up by saying with Dreamcast “it’s possible to run your own code on the original hardware without a modchip on most versions of the console, so pretty much everyone with a Dreamcast can just pop the disc in and play your game.” We wait with excitement for more news on HarleQuest! and thank Ross for his time chatting with Fusion.
