Here at Fusion R Gamer, we love our indie games, as you might have gathered, so as the year draws to a close, I thought I’d look back over my 10 best indie games of 2023. Please bear in mind that this is my personal list of my best indie games of 2023, and I don’t presume to speak for the rest of the Fusion R Gamer team, whose lists would, I’m sure, be very different from mine. And hey, Dave the Diver is nowhere to be seen! Not only to avoid the furore caused by The Game awards but also because I haven’t played it. But my 10 best indie games of 2023 that I have played are…
1. Hyper Meteor
An old-school Asteroids-inspired dodge-’em-up that’s very much its own thing, and infinitely playable. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this one!
2. Project Blue
A remarkable new NES game that feels fresh and new, while still working within the technical confines of the NES hardware, An impressive feat that’s fun to play.
3. Astlibra Revision
This 2D side-scrolling RPG is a remarkable one-man passion project by a first-time sole developer, some 14 years in the making. There’s a lush-looking fantasy world to explore, and enjoyable hack-and-slash combat in which to engage.
4. Papertris
An addictive puzzler that’s more than jut another Tetris clone.
5. Murtop
Do you like Dig Dug? Do you like Bomberman? If you answered yes to both of those questions, you’ll love Murtop.
6. Full Quiet
Like Project Blue, Full Quiet is an ambitious new indie game that still excelsl within the restrictions of NES hardware.
7. Roniu’s Tale
Another fantastic new entry into the modern NES indire canon, this time amaze-based puzzler.
8. Dude, Where is My Beer?
A humorous point and click adventure following the trauma of a pilsner drinker trapped in a craft beer world.
9. Stray Gods
An enchanting blend of fantasy visual novel with a musical.
10. Gematombe
An engaging, well-presented puzzler inspired by Puzzle Bobble and Breakout.
This feature was originally going to be my 5 best indie games of 2023, but it shows what an embarrassment of riches we’ve had this year that I couldn’t narrow it down to just five, so instead I’ve brought you my 10 best indie games of 2023, and narrowing it down to tr=en was tricky enough!
