A new website called OriginalVideoGameArt.com is aiming to showcase the original art pieces used for video game box art of the 80s and 90s. It launches 1st November with the aim to present high quality, uncropped and unobstructed images of the original paintings from some of gaming histories most memorable box art.
In a statement, OVGA Founder Ibrahim Faraj explains that “many of these paintings were not retained by the game companies themselves. As a result, some collectors have been able to obtain the original works of art they remember from their childhoods. With box art being frequently uncredited at the time of release and with the information at risk of being lost to time, private collectors have played a significant role in the research, documentation, and preservation of these works of art.”
The website will be free to use and be broken into two parts, one for the art itself and the other a database of artists and information for collectors to pour over. The artwork will be show in virtual galleries and a forum available to discuss the art itself.
