Amazingly, it’s been nearly 20 years since the original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released and wowed everyone with its platforming, wall running, and time reversal. It successfully updated the 80s original and spawned two solid sequels. The 2008 reinvention, whilst decent, was a bit too different and the series seems to have disappeared while being overtaken by other franchises, such as Assassins Creed.

That was until 2020 when a remake of the original Sands of Time title was announced and was already in development by Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune. Fans were disappointed that it was not an all-new game, however, excited at the same time to see how the classic would be remade for modern hardware.

Then came the trailer. It looked dated, not much different from the original, and, well just a bit shit…

The backlash was big, and people wondered, given the January 2021 release date, whether there was enough time to make real improvements. Numerous delays followed, everything went silent, and fans were again hopeful that things were in motion. It turns out they were, but not as we expected.

Ubisoft has now given an update informing fans that development is switching studios, to Ubisoft Montréal, developers of the original. There is no news on a new release date, other than it will be ready when it’s ready. This gives the impression that there were real major issues with the project, and hopefully, an established team can finally do the game some justice. Although at this point I think most fans would welcome a whole trilogy remake in one package.
