OOh Arr Me Hearties! Fancy some swashbuckling action on the seven seas? Then look no further than Sea Horizon from Softstar and 45 Studio, published by EastAsiaSoft. In this turn-based tactical combat game, you play as one of several pirate heroes looking to find fortune, revenge and action. Sea Horizons is available on PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
On the map screen, you move around squares that deplete your stamina gauge. If you run out of food, it’s game over, so you must pick up extra food from vendors as you move forward. Once you encounter an enemy or a boss you switch to the combat screen that plays out in a traditional JRPG fashion. During battles, a complex dice roll system is used that determines which of your equipped actions you can use during that round.
Several other modes mix up the gameplay and add extra characters to your team, but the mechanics play out the same. As you progress through an adventure the usual level ups to your equipment, attacks and magics become available. The level up system is a little basic but considering the different types of dice you do need to think strategically about what actions you equip.
Sea Horizons is one of those quick, pick-up-and-play games that you don’t need to sink hours upon hours into. Once you get to grips with the straightforward mechanics, the game comes to life and you will be sailing away on many adventures. The presentation is decent for a game at this price point and there is plenty here for strategy and RPG fans to enjoy.
