Released in May 2020 on Xbox, PS4, PC and Switch, Infinite – Beyond The Mind is getting ready for a physical release this year thanks to Strictly Limited Games. We reported on the news and have now had a chance to play the game on the Switch.
You take control of one of two chibi-styled characters, Tanya or Olga, as you take on the almighty Queen and her army. You battle your way through levels of 2D platforming action with each ending in a boss fight. There are a few extra levels that take on a different genre, such as a horizontal shooter, but most of the action follows the traditional action platformer style.
Both characters play the same and have a basic attack, double jump and a dash move that makes you invulnerable for a few moments. The action is fast and the controls are tight but there isn’t any power ups and little variety in the enemies. Most just fire easy to avoid bullets and are little challenge to take down.
The boss fights are the highlights of the gameplay as each one has different attack patterns as well as proving hard to beat, especially towards the end of the game. However, most of Infinite’s gameplay is quite basic and many of the standard enemies can be completely avoided by dashing through the levels.
The graphics are great, if a little bland in places, and some of the backgrounds are gorgeous. Infinite may not appeal to everyone however, its chibi-style characters, with big heads and simple animation, is certainly an acquired taste. The soundtrack is also good and the overall presentation is commendable.
There is a lot to like about Infinite, with its tight controls and great boss fights, but the game is mostly generic and the lack of other abilities does mean it gets repetitive in places. Those who like action platformers will find fun here for a while but its not doing anything that makes it stand out.
