We recently reviewed the enjoyable 3D indie platforming tribute to the Nintendo 64, Super Kiwi 64, in which we pondered a return for an older Kiwi-based game, namely The NewZealand Story.
Well, we don’t quite have that, but Taito’s well-loved 1988 arcade platformer is the latest release in Hamster’s Arcade Archives series.
If you’re as old as we are, chances are you have very fond memories of Ocean’s well-received 8-bit and 16-bit home computer ports of The NewZealand Story. Well, now you can enjoy the arcade original in the comfort of your own home on PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch.
The New Zealand Story was released to the Arcade Archives series yesterday (Thursday 26th January 2023).
So, will you be taking control of Tiki the kiwi and his bow and arrow for some nostalgic arcade platforming fun? I know I will!

I had a NES in the days of the SNES, so most NES games were budget priced or discounted. All except for New Zealand Story of course. Both New Zealand Story and Maniac Mansion stayed stubbornly priced at £40 on the shop shelves, while other titles were selling for £29.99 or less… and I waited and waited for their price to come down…and finally they just vanished from the shelves. So now, I’d love to revisit those always-desired-and-never-obtained NES titles…so will have to look into the Switch release – since I don’t yet have a PS4 or PS5.
I bought it as a budget re-release on the Amiga. I think it was £7.99. Great game.
Wait…was it £40? Or was it the notorious £49.99? XD. Haha.
I remember taking the Amiga version round to a school friend’s house and he and his brother just went on about how crap it was. No taste, clearly. I think the title led them to believe it was an RPG or something.
