We previously previewed Super Kiwi 64, and now the game is out, so does it live up to our high expectations? Let’s find out!
Could this game be the mash up of Mario 64 and the New Zealand Story we never knew we needed? Well, it’s not quite that. (As an aside, wouldn’t a modern version of New Zealand Story be great? More kiwis in games, say we!)
So, what is Super Kiwi 64? It’s possibly best thought of as a tribute to the post-Mario 64 era of 3D platform games for the Nintendo 64.
The graphics “boast” a low polygon count to authentically replicate the visual style of Nintendo 64 games, and it looks great, with the titular Kiwi being particularly well designed. The background music is also jaunty and atmospheric, adding to the game’s welcoming atmosphere.
So, Super Kiwi 64 looks and sounds the part, but is it fun to play? Short answer: yes.
Playing Super Kiwi 64 is a serene, mid-paced gaming experience for the most part, with intuitive controls and no baddies to jump on, and an emphasis on collecting and exploring. But beware! Despite the game initially appearing cute and fluffy (which it is for the most part), your explorations will reveal some surprisingly eerie images hidden away throughout the levels. The game’s ability to surprise in this way is one of my favourite things about it.
For fans of N64-era platformers looking for a relaxing, nostalgic platforming experience, Super Kiwi 64 is a must at under £3 from the eshop. Super Kiwi 64 is a fun, simple, tasty snack of a game.
