Lunark, from first-time developer Canari Games, is a slow-paced action platformer that pays homage to the classics such as Flashback and Another World. Speedy platform jumping is replaced with precision jumps and simple puzzles all mixed in with an atmospheric dystopian future. It is available for Switch, Xbox, PlayStation and PC. There is also a physical release from Limited Run Games.
The story is set around a conspiracy where the meg-rich live on Earth’s moon that has left orbit and arrived at another planet. You play as Leo, a working-class hero that has reluctantly taken up a quest to uncover the conspiracy and set the populace free.
Lunark is slick and takes everything that made these cinematic-type titles so loved and sprinkles lots of modern features to bring it up to date. It also has a compelling story that is filled with intrigue and surprising moments that are told through short rotoscope cutscenes.
The controls are tight and there are lots of moves for Leo to take advantage of. The puzzles are straightforward but can be mixed in with tricky platforming and this helps Lunark provide a tough challenge in places. All the action is broken up with the set piece, screen-filling boss fights that are jaw-dropping at times.
The visuals and music bring the dystopian future to life and it’s hard not to be immersed in this unfair world. Overall, Lunark is a must-buy for those who enjoy slower-paced, cinematic platform games or those looking for a quality story-driven adventure.
