Today marks 34 years since the original Game Boy launched and what better way to celebrate than getting your hands on an ultimate guide to everything related to Nintendo’s handheld wonder? Paul Murphy, who runs the retro publishing house Ninty Media, has launched a new Kickstarter campaign for a brand new book that covers the Game Boy, technically called DMG, and its games. Fusion got a very sneaky first look at a test print and we can officially say this book is going to be high quality and filled with Game Boy goodness.
The book will look at the history of the handheld itself and its iconic game library. And it’s in safe hands as Paul has form in creating exciting Nintendo books, most notably his Unofficial amiibo Handbook. He told Fusion that “the Game Boy was my first console. Well technically it was my mum’s, but I was able to use it and repeatedly snuck it out of the house to school. It was my introduction to gaming and the source of my love and affection for Nintendo. After writing a book about amiibo I wanted to really test myself and start writing a gaming series.”
And that love for the Game Boy has never dwindled as Paul continues his thought by explaining “portable gaming and the Game Boy, in particular, are huge sources of enjoyment and nostalgia I wanted to craft a love letter to the device. Look at the history, identify iconic experiences and work with freelancers to curate some detailed retrospectives. All are adorned with beautiful bespoke artwork and complemented with photographs. It’s a true love letter to the DMG-01.”
When asked about the challenge ahead to get this ambitious book to eager readers hand Paul feels “we are always our own biggest critics, and although the amiibook was well received I really wanted to challenge myself and test the boundaries of what can be achieved. This is the most ambitious project I’ve undertaken yet (after more than 100 crowdfunded magazines and a book) so I really hope that people enjoy what has been made.”
