It comes as no surprise that Google Stadia has announced that its being closed down. The game streaming service promised to bring gaming into the future but after poor sales and a lack of interest from players it will be closed. Subscribers can still play all the games up until 18th January 2023. The world just wasn’t ready for cloud gaming, much like console gamers weren’t ready for online play when the Dreamcast was cancelled.
Everyone who has purchased hardware and software will receive a full refund. In a press statement, Vice President Phil Harrison said “while Stadia’s approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service. We’re so grateful for the groundbreaking work of the team and we look forward to continuing to have an impact across gaming.”
At least they’re refunding everyone for hardware and software.

It’s the developers I feel for. Apparently they found out the same time everyone else did. Shocking way to treat the very people who were making content for Stadia 🙁
I’d be interested to see how many of the users of stadia get the option to transfer save data from exiting titles to other platforms, for example red dead redemption 2. Also what efforts are being made by developers to preserve the exclusive titles that were on the platform?
These questions haven’t affected other platforms yet, but it’s worth understanding the implications that an all-digital future can contain when the inevitable occurs.
That would be a nice parting gift to those that invested in it. Getting their money back AND moving saves over. We shall find out about the exclusive games, hopefully, they are not tied into some silly deal with google and can move the titles over to steam or whatever.
